Deconstructing Art

Hey Guys!

One of the most time-consuming aspects when creating the environment assets for Fallen World is creating the infection/decay on all of the buildings. It takes me about an hour to make each building asset for the game. This is because when I create the buildings, I make them clean. Then I go back and begin deconstructing the building.

First, I use the pen tool and add our signature orange lines across the whole building to signify that it has been infected. Then I go around the whole building and start to deconstruct it. Using modified shapes or the pen tool I will make black shapes throughout the building that represent holes and cuts in the building. Finally, after that I go back and start to move the windows, door, or other parts around. For windows and doors, I will duplicate the asset, make the duplicate black, and then place it behind the original. This way when I rotate and move the window, there is still an outline of where it was.

In the case of the Factory I had to do a little bit more deconstruction. The game design team specifically asked for the buildings to be tagged with graffiti. So, after making a building and deconstructing it, I had to go back and over lay graffiti onto the buildings. For the graffiti I started with things like letters, and then slightly altered them and added additional lines. Then I began to take generic symbols such as crowns and put a twist on them to make them better fit our game.

So far, I have had the most fun creating the assets for the factory, some of my personal favorites have been the chemical refinery and the generator area. I am looking forward to creating the Church next, because the stain glass windows allow for a lot of creative freedom.
