Brainstorming New Enemies

During the process of coming up with new quests, there came a point where I had to think of unique enemies for each of the areas the player would visit. The challenge was mainly in creating an enemy that blends in with the rest of the area, and also serves its purpose in challenging the player. Usually when brainstorming, I try to write down any animal that comes to mind and combine different mechanics when possible. for example, a Slime Puff: a slug (the size of a cat for comparison) that sprays a small puff of gas, so if a player walks through it without a gas mask they take damage. The puff of gas slowly floats up and disperses into the upper atmosphere. They can kill it but it’ll just attract more so they just have to avoid the puff of gas in the streets. This is found in the mines, making it impossible to breath without a gas mask for that quest. They're also found in the next area over, but they are less harmful because it's in open air.  Another enemy is a Centiwebber: A centipede that spits out webbing to capture the player, player must equip a knife to free themselves before attacking. Once webbing is spit out there is a grace period of 1 min before spitting again, and will try to jump the player while they’re caught. This enemy can be killed using a long range weapon and wont follow you if you’re out of range. Their “tell” in the mines is you can see the shine of their legs in the darkness before they come into view. This was created to add stress to a situation, while also allowing the player enough chances to beat it. The ideal place to have these is in close-quarter abandoned areas or rural areas on the map. Currently they can be found in the mines.
