Nate's Devlog 1- The start of something great!

Hi! My name is Nathan Raia and I'm the Lead Writer on the new game Whispering Abyss! I bring lots of creativity and outside-the-box thinking to the team. Being super adaptable paired with some of the great minds on this team only spells one hell of a game to me! I've worked with some of these developers before, but I'm also getting introduced to a bunch I've never worked with before. It's set to be a very good learning experience no matter what way the development goes!

I'm very excited about this project because I have some awesome ideas for the narrative in this game format. I'm used to telling linear stories that have a natural progression but at this point, Whispering Abyss isn't set to have an ending! This means I get to tell the story in ways not often seen in the gaming world. Through lore bits in item descriptions, thoughts our main protagonist is having or has had before, or even through the very few dialogue lines. The less I have to work with the more impactful what makes it into the game will be!

This week I worked on the intro sequence that will play when a new game is started. By nature of the game's genre, I wanted the intro sequence to be a bit bare and quick so players can jump directly into the action. While writing this intro I actually came up with the idea of adding the thoughts of the main character into the game after she interacts with the bed in an effort to communicate more of the story to the player. While this feature isn't finalized and might appear more than just when interacting with the bed I'm very excited to see what avenues this plot device will take me down. At the end of the day, I'd like to be able to tell the story of the main character and the town of Duluth through item descriptions, the main character's thoughts, and the environment. As always I hope to incorporate different types of feelings in my writing. I'd like to use humor to break up the monotony of a purely scary game and I'd like to write parts that are positively bone-chilling!

Until next time,

-Nate
